Rambles from SEI

Random ideas and subjects from south east Indiana. We live in a small town located about halfway between Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Two teenagers, one each, one about to graduate. Two dogs, two cats, the only males in the house are human.

It feels like Seattle!

Funny how your expectations can differ. In a phone call with Mom this morning, I remarked on how cold it is here today (48). She replied that they were at 46 and were surprised it was that warm!

We are getting a Starbucks! Really! It is going in next to the interstate exit, between a motel and Wendy's. Last fall, some enterprising soul built a small hut behind Wendy's and called it the "Java Hut" for drive thru coffee. So with a Starbucks going in right across the driveway from them you can imagine how ticked they are. I would feel more sorry for them if they could turn out decent coffee. I haven't even wanted to give them a try since no one I know that has bought coffee there has liked it. It is one thing to call yourself a coffee shop it is another to actually make good coffee. But they don't (naturally) think that way. All they can see is that Starbucks got a variance on a sign and they were misinformed about the meeting time. So the building commission held another vote after listening to their concerns and (surprise!) voted to grant the sign variance again. I'm not usually in favor of the giant national company over a locally owned business, BUT the local business needs to be somewhat in the ballpark with their services, prices and quality.

One thing Starbucks does right is coffee, and the customer is right so don't let them give you any crap! There's lots of coffee education that we go through, so if you ever have a question, look for someone in a black apron (coffee master) which means they will know a helluva lot about coffee.

What's a Poli Sci major got to do with this situation? ;) If you want to control your neighbors you build where they are a known quanity, or you control the area around you. This is like the man who started squealing about Krogers going into the empty acrage behind him. Everybody knew for 2 years that K. was building there. He just didn't ask before he built.

Or worse, the guy that buys the cheap property next to the runway and then tries to get the airport moved because it is too loud.
The poli-sci comment was an attempt at humor (failed obviously) cuz all you poli-sci's are bleeding heart, fight for the little man, down with free enterprize, pinko, commie mugs- right?

Okay, you got me! But I passed those qualitites off on a certain member of the family that lives in OP! Did we ever tell you about the real estate developer in Yuma or 29 Palms who got a good deal on land just on the otherside of a fence from a bombing range? After the first house went in, the General could tell what would happen and they started using that range exclusively. Not another house was built or sold there!
